Develop a Standout Proposal
A standout proposal is your book’s calling card, your one shot to capture the attention of busy, overworked agents who need a compelling reason to read beyond your first paragraph. It’s proof you understand the publishing market place and your book’s place in it, that you’ve fully thought through your book, are clear about who wants to read it, and have the skills to pull it off. Knowing how critical it is, many writers find the idea of crafting a proposal to be more daunting than the task of writing a book. But with support and guidance, it needn’t be.
THIS IS FOR YOU IF YOU’VE:
- clarified your book idea
- outlined your content and begun researching and writing
- completed and revised your manuscript and polished, edited, or workshopped it to the point at which it fully realizes your vision.
WHAT YOU’LL GET:
Across four deadlines, you’ll get assignments and guidance for creating the various components of a book proposal, from table of contents to sample chapters. Over the first two sessions/deadlines, you’ll use a template to construct your proposal. After the first and second deadline, you’ll get:
- inline comments on the work you submit
- an editorial letter summarizing the feedback
- a 45-minute Zoom or call.
By the next deadline, you’ll draft a sample chapter and will then receive:
- inline comments
- an editorial letter
- and a 45-minute Zoom or call
Then you’ll revise and for the four session we’ll have a 45-minute Zoom or call to discuss the changes and recommendations for your next steps.
TIME FRAME:
Two to four months. It takes a significant investment of time to develop a solid proposal, and the four-session package can be completed in bimonthly sessions over two months or monthly sessions over four months, depending on your schedule and the amount of time you have to devote. We’ll set a schedule before the first deadline. If you’re not able to complete it in that time frame, you can purchase additional sessions.
INVESTMENT:
- $795
- $200 for each additional session
WHEN WE’RE DONE:
- you’ll be ready to craft a compelling query to attract an agent or editor
- you can begin to pitch the book as you work alone or with a coach to complete a draft, after which you may benefit from a manuscript evaluation or developmental edit
- you’ll have a powerful marketing tool—including all the elements agents and publishers want to see, including a synopsis, overview, bio, marketing plan, comps, chapter overviews, and two sample chapters that will guide you as you launch your book, whether by self-publishing or traditional publishing.
